Trevor Nunn directs Terence Rattigan's comedy

After a critically acclaimed opening at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Trevor Nunn’s revival of Terence Rattigan’s 1944 comedy Love in Idleness comes to the Apollo Theatre. Set during the final years of the Second World War, Love in Idleness sees young Michael Brown return home after four years away in Canada, bringing with him left-wing, youthful ideologies. When he discovers his widowed mother, Olivia, has become the mistress of topical cabinet minister John Fletcher, the two personalities begin to clash, pulling into question Olivia’s relationships.

Last seen in London in 1944, Love in Idleness is the rarely revived play from the writer behind Harlequinade, The Winslow Boy, The Browning Version, The Deep Blue Sea and many more.

Love in Idleness is Terence Rattigan’s 1944 comedy, directed by Trevor Nunn (Les Miserables, Fatal Attraction, Relative Values). Produced by the Menier Chocolate Factory, the play features design by Stephen Brimson Lewis, lighting design by Paul Pyant, sound design by Gregory Clarke and projection design by Duncan McLean.

Casting includes Olivier Award-winning actress Eve Best (Hedda Gabler, The Duchess of Malfi) as Olivia Brown, Anthony Head (BBC’s Merlin) as John Fletcher and Edward Bluemel (The Halcyon) as Michael Brown. Further casting includes Vivienne Rochester and Nicola Sloane.

Show Lengths and Times

Love in Idleness plays at the Apollo Theatre London from May 11^th to July 1^st 2017, with an official opening on May 18^th 2017. Performances are at 7:30pm Tuesday-Saturday, with matinees on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 2pm.

Show running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes, including an interval.
